Searching searching searching...

Well, I've been following my ancestry and I'm fairly certain that it is from Scotland and not England. So that makes it a little easier to determine where I should be looking for the coat of arms of my ancestors. Or does it? We can never be too sure. There is a history of the name Johnson in going as far back in English records as 1066 AD - and in Scotish lore, Johnson is but a sept of the Gunn Clan who only started using Gunn as their name after the Johnson's in England...so, should I be putting more weight on the English history of the name to reserach my family's crest, or should I do more research that I don't really feel like doing right now to try and extrapolate the exact crests that may have been created in my family line; hmmm, anyway here are a couple of crests that I did find that are for the Johnson name, somewhere, sometime...

History of the Johnson Coat of Arms: This is a name of many origins, given that it means the son of John, this branch is an ancient family from Cheshire, England.
Johnson Coat of Arms: Quarterly, per fesse indented or and azure in the first quarter an eagle, wings expanded sable.
Johnson Crest: On a ducal coronet or, an eagle, as in the arms.
Johnson Motto: Vigilans
Johnson Motto Translation:
Vigilant

The name Johnson was brought to England in the great wave of migration following the Norman Conquest of 1066. The name literally means "son of John," a given name which is derived from the Hebrew name "Johanan," meaning "Jehovah has favored." The name was extremely popular in the Middle Ages as a result of the numerous connections between the name John and the Christian Church.

First found in Lincolnshire, where the Johnson family had been granted lands by Duke William on his conquest of England in 1066.

And the more I seem to research the more variations I find to the Johnson and Gunn crests/coat of arms...my seach must continue. And why, you may ask, am I researching this right now? Well...I am designing a tatoo I want to get and I am hoping to integrate some elements of my family history to make it that much more personal. That's what I'm hoping to do anyway...
